Uppsala University’s Institutionen för freds- och konfliktforskning (Department of Peace and Conflict Research) is hiring one or two postdoctoral researchers for a project titled “Political Violence in Democracies”. This is funded by a Wallenberg Scholar grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, led by Professor Hanne Fjelde.

The project aims to explore threats posed by political violence in established democracies. It will analyze public attitudes toward violence, protest behavior, extremism, and how elite rhetoric influences legitimacy and democratic norms. Methods will include survey experiments, observational data, and analysis of online discourse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the project lead and team to design, coordinate, and execute quantitative data collection and analysis.
  • Publish research outcomes in high-impact scientific journals.
  • Possibly contribute to teaching at the department.
  • Manage research-related expenses with provided resources.

Who Should Apply?

You are a great fit if you:

  • Hold a PhD (by the time of appointment) in peace & conflict studies, political science, sociology, psychology, or related disciplines.
  • Have strong quantitative skills — ideally with experience in survey experiments or field experiments. Also a good track record of publications.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Preferably completed PhD within the last three years; allowances made for parental leave, illness, etc.

  • Duration: 2 years, full-time (100%)
  • Start date: 1 December 2025 (or a date by mutual agreement)
  • Location: Uppsala, Sweden
